Is the Catholic Church beginning to give up its battle against equality? Is it starting appreciate that it is no longer the 16th century and people are no longer willing to have how they live their lives dictated to them? Hardly, but since Benedict Ratzinger stepped down from his golden throne in the Vatican in February of this year, clicked his red Prada shoes together and flew off to Castel Gondolfo a lot has changed in the upper echelons of priestdom. His replacement, the new and less less flashy white throne perched ‘man of the people’ Francis, has been suspiciously less vocal on his corporation’s opposition to the civil rights struggle of our time. Equal marriage. As France ushered in Equal marriage last week could they finally have had a change of heart? Probably not, but the PR machine that drives the world’s biggest business may finally be getting it right.
Pope Francis’ Less Fancy Throne
Having in the past described equality as an ‘attempt to destroy God’s plan’ and having had the gall to equate adoption of children by gay couples with the devil, Francis is unusually restrained with his hate speech of late. With a lack-lustre Popestock Conclave and haemorrhaging congregations all over the Western world his PR handlers must be getting wise and realising that a change of tack is necessary if they are to keep the Vatican gold vaults and bank accounts full. Considering the practical necessities of not upsetting a large amount of people and risking losing more much loved Sunday financial offerings the PR men must have quite a job on their hands to shut up a man whose hatred of gay people could jeopardise the one thing the Catholic Church has supreme authority on – making money.
As France, one of the World’s most secular but also predominantly Catholic countries struggled with its own people’s prejudices against equality in the run up to passing the marriage equality law it must have been a particularly tongue biting experience for Francis to keep shtum. Benedict if still in power would have been hysterically screeching fire and brimstone while flapping his gold lame cloak around like a demented harpy ushering storm clouds over Notre Dame Cathedral. Of course French Catholic priests lost themselves in a tizzy of bible bile in their Sunday sermons, but no one really cares about the footmen when the Queen supposedly has a one on one thing going on with the man up -stairs.
French Catholic Church Mobilises against Marriage Equality
For an organisation that assumes itself to have a moral monopoly it’s amazing how adaptable this moral monopoly can become when the proverbial shit begins to hit the fan. Francis is nothing if not a practical power grabber. As CEO of the world’s biggest corporation he has a job to do and that is maximise profit and make sure it remains top dog in the business of selling hope and fantasies. If that means compromising the previous hate-line then that’s what has to be done. In turn if a large portion of humanity is spared the firing line then all the better. Are we about to see a new more tolerant and caring church. Doubtful, but hopefully we will have a more restrained one.
